[…] So there are “bad people” in the lake, outside the gate, but are they able to come in or not if they decide they want to? Maybe that’s taking everything too literally, and maybe these are the kinds of questions that can’t be completely answered, but still, Bell went to such lengths explaining away so many other references that I find it interesting he glossed over this one as just being part of that complicated Revelation book. Even if we charitably assume that Bell didn’t have room to explain every verse, and even if we assume that any cohesive interpretation of the Bible is going to involve accepting some parts as literal and some parts as not (and other parts as both?), it still feels like Bell might be cherry-picking stuff to support his case. However, I will say that any traditionalist who completely rules out the possibility that God may consider himself glorified by saving all people, and who would not be overjoyed were that to be true, may not fully grasp the love of God or the grace of God. I will also say that any, er, universalist (?) who completely rules out the possibility that God may consider himself glorified by not saving those who do not turn to him, and who would consider that immoral or unfair were that to be true, may not fully grasp the justice of God or the sovereignty of God. But after all, who among us can fully grasp any of it anyway? next up: Chapters 5-6 […]

I also tried to read Rob Bell with an open mind. But I finally got it. He is not interested in rational argument. He is simply a post-modern, deconstructing a narrative. He is interested in tearing down and he is not particular about how he does it. He decided that emotionally-charged words are good, though.
It gets worse, Josh, trust me on that.
I gave Rob Bell a chapter in my book on current Christian issues, but mostly as a horrible example of what is wrong with contemporary Christianity. I do take a great deal of trouble to show where he goes wrong. But, as I said, he is not really interested in actual truth.
Don't have time to go into it here but you can check this link: http://readersfavorite.com/book-review/11108
Blessings..............

I love your thoughts Josh. I do think you bit into the controversy a little more then you think you did though...

I totally get that he's writing in a provocative way, but I think it's actually warranted. As one who spends a lot of time in church leadership circles, I see constantly where we speak boldly and in a black and white way about these things that scripture leaves more open.

The Christian doctrine of salvation has been tightened and formulated as a form of protection, I mean we don't want to mess that up, but we have to be careful to let scripture inform theology not the other way around.

The scripture is plain and spimple more open in its description of how salvation works then modern christian theology describes. We have to be ok with that...

I also think his point about believing ect being verbs is of absolute importance. One of the gravest failures of the modern American church is the cheapening of Gods grace. The "all done with no do" mentality has built multiple generations of believers who disconnect their personal responsibility from their sins and their standing with God, but scripture is pretty clear that lots or our decisions and actions directly effect our standing with God (ie willingness to forgive others). Belief is an action guided by choice of will. So is receiving. So is obeying. So is submitting.

We down play the believers role in the Christian life to the detriment of the church...

You haven't even gotten to the real controversial stuff yet. You're still in the good meat section of the book... : )
